And of old it was not darksome, but full of light and splendour, as it
is still remembered in our songs." (I)

Abandoned ruins and fortifications pepper the MEPBM map. They seem to be of a fixed nature. That is, they are there from game to game. Each represents a location in the books, such as the Barrowdowns or Moria, abandoned to time, or such as Dale or the Lonely Mountain, recently devastated. The first character not with an army that visits each location recieves an automatic encounter (no response necessary or available) that will randomly give either gold (about 5,000 to 25000 gold) or battle. The battle is almost always with some form of undead with an extremely low challenge rank (30 Emissaries can put these undead to permanent rest!). However, some, such as the Lonely Mountain and Moria can also be with Dragons, the Balrog, or the famous "Lonely Mountains" encounter (still unsolved).
