CADENCE 1999 RECORD POLL
The Critics and Readers have sent their regards for a job well done.
Again, the post Bop world dominates,
crowding out worthy releases in the more traditional areas of improvising
music. The post bop fans are a
responsive lot and, since the genre is better represented in out
poll than proportionate record sales would
suggest, one assumes they are more active nominators, through labels
such as Criss Cross and Blue Note
were well represented but it was without a strong consensus of any
particular issues. There are other
reasons for voting patterns: geographical, touring, promotional.
An excerpt from Richard Hutchinson's
(Utah) note attached to his nomination suggests more and other reasonings
that go into voting: "...I
couldn't hear everything, my impression is that this year was an
off year compared to '97 and '98 as far as
adventurous jazz and improvised music... William Parker's The Peach
Orchard, which I'm sure will do
well, particularly since it will have a big NYC contingent pulling
for it, was a record that I wanted to like,
but found disappointing - not nearly as good as Compassion, was
my reaction. I also enjoyed Steve Turre's
latest and Sam River's big band record, but given the Cadence emphasis
on improvisation over
composition, the fact that these had not been reviewed, I did not
include them."
As usual, some artists and labels are heavily represented in nominations
but the nominations are spread out
over so many different releases, no strong consensus emerged in
the final listings.
And, finally, this year we had a bit of a confusion. Cecil Taylor's
Qu'a Yuba was nominated 3 different
ways: Qu'a Yuba Vol. 1 (26 votes). Vol. 2 (80 votes) and with no
volume specifications (48 votes). We
eliminated Vol. 1's votes (Vol. 1 was #2 in the 1998 Readers Poll,
1/99. p. 13) and combined the votes on
the other 2 designations.
Readers could nominate any recordings, awarding each nomination up
to 5 points but not awarding more
than a total of 25 points in each category (New Issues/Reissues).
Writers are limited to 10 choices in each category and can only choose
from recordings reviewed in
Cadence from Dec. 1998 through Nov. 1999. The Editor's Choice is
within the same guidelines, except
that he has unlimited choices. Cadence writers are not allowed to
list any recordings with which they have
directly had a role in its production and execution.
Once again, readers and writers have helped us recognize some outstanding
