Well, mooseman, here are my DID's. As I said before, they reflect a
hopelessly conventional musical
mind, but they are all both highly entertaining and "good music"; to
quote Duke Ellington, there are only
two types of music, good and bad. These are in no particular order.
1) Duke Ellington "New Orleans Suite" 1971
2) Duke Ellington "Jazz Party" 1959(?);
3) Miles Davis "Sketches of Spain" 1958(?)
4) Beatles "Rubber Soul" 1966(?)
5) Beatles "Revolver" 1967(?)
6) Beatles "Sergeant Pepper's..." 1968(?)
7) Randy Newman "Little Criminals" 1976(?)
8) Randy Newman "Trouble in Paradise" 1978(?)
9) Randy Newman "Bad Love" 1999
10) Don Ellis "Tears of Joy" 1969(?);
11) Tony Bennett "Astoria" (1990)
12) Tony Bennett "Steppin' Out" (1993)
13) Tony Bennett "Bennett/Berlin" 1987
14) Frank Sinatra "Songs for Swingin' Lovers" 1956
15) Frank Sinatra "Francis Albert Sinatra/Antonio Carlos Jobim" 1967
16) Frank Sinatra "Sinatra's Swingin' Session" 1961(?)
17) Frank Sinatra "Reprise Collection" 4 CD's
18) Maynard Ferguson "MF Horn" 1971
19) Maynard Ferguson "These Cats Can Swing!" 1994
20) Maynard Ferguson "The Complete Roulette Recordings of the Maynard
Ferguson Orchestra" (1958-62) 10 CD's
21) Maynard Ferguson "Live at Jimmy's" (1973) 2 LP's
22) Steely Dan "Aja" 1977(?)
23) Steely Dan "The Royal Scam" 1976(?)
24) Donald Fagen "The Nightfly" 1981(?)
25) Nancy LaMott "Come Rain or Come Shine:The Songs of Johnny Mercer"
1992(?)
26) Dawn Upshaw "I Wish it So" 1993(?)
27) Dave Brubeck "To Hope! A Celebration" 1994(?)
28) Tuck and Patti "Love Warriors" 1989
29) Joan Armatrading "Classics" complilation
30) Rick Moore "He Won't Now Eh" 1994(?).
Notes: Dawn Upshaw is the unusual opera singer who can actually sing
pop. Here she does Bernstein,
Weill, Sondheim, etc. Nancy LaMott was a cabaret singer with an incredibly
beautiful voice. She died
young. The Brubeck CD is his Mass; simple but beautiful. I really prefer
Royal Scam to Aja, but I wanted
to include a second Dan. The Armatrading complilation is unusual in
that it has almost no "duds". Rick
Moore is a Philadelphia area singer/songwriter/guitarist, desrving
wider recognition. I would like to add
some Basie, etc., but no room.
